“[It is on] Our Lady [that] all my own small perception of beauty both in majesty and simplicity is founded. The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision.” (J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter 142)
In these times of social distancing and greater isolation, it may be difficult to find support for your daily walk with Christ. Thankfully, we have amazing digital tools that can enable us to connect with our fellow pilgrims anytime we need to.
With the Discord app, you can sign on to the Aglarond server and pray or share with others in voice or text channels.
Record the fruits of your journey
Journalling can be a fruitful spiritual practice in its own right; it is especially beneficial when embarking upon a transformative journey, such as an extended retreat or consecration preparation. Traditional paper journals have their own advantages, but digital tools make it easier to search for particular insights we may have forgotten, and to share our experiences with our fellow pilgrims.
Of the many free and paid apps available, I have found Journey to be the most suitable to use for a spiritual journal, because it syncs reliably across all my devices, its design is simple and visually appealing, and I can edit the date and time of an entry if I am transcribing notes from a paper journal or find some old handwritten notes.
[The Lord of the Rings is] eminently a Catholic work, unconsciously so at first, but ever more so in the revision. And if you know what you’re looking at, you know that’s absolutely true—especially as it referred to the Blessed Sacrament and to Our Lady. Where they appear in The Lord of the Rings is a beautiful illustration of “He who has eyes to see . . .” , because if you know what you’re looking at, it jumps out at you. But if you don’t know what you’re looking at, it gives you a yearning for it. That yearning for the Blessed Sacrament and for Our Lady, that’s a very important thing that people often take away with them unknowingly.”Charles A. Coulombe
